Often listed as people’s favorite food, pizza makes the list over and over again. While statistics vary, it seems that Americans eat 3 billion pizzas per year, though per capita, the country of Norway consumes the most slices.
The techniques for pizza making could fill many books…type of flour to use, classic or quick rise yeast, to knead or not to knead…and that’s not even the toppings! Pizza can be a healthy meal when made with wholesome ingredients, and it can even be easy.
If you avoid gluten and are looking for a grain free pizza recipe, we've got you covered! We've been making this simple crust from scratch for years, both in gluten and gluten free varieties. So here's our very own pizza dough recipe—it’s simple, quick, and very customizable.
Quick & Easy Gluten Free Pizza Dough Recipe
- 2 Cups Gluten Free Flour (we prefer a cup for cup style 1:1 blend)
- 1 Red Star Active Dry Yeast Packet (our favorite baking yeast since there's no preservatives)
- 1 Teaspoon Olive or Avocado Oil
- Dash of Salt
- 1/2 Teaspoon Organic Coconut Sugar
- 3/4 to 1 Cup Lukewarm Water
Directions:
Prepare yeast according to packet directions. This means pouring the yeast and coconut sugar into a bowl with 1/4 cup of warm water. Let it sit to "bloom" and get foamy for about 10 minutes. Remember that 1/4 cup counts to the overall amount of water.
Combine all other pizza dough ingredients together, then pour in the water/yeast mixture. Knead dough. We typically just do the kneading right in the bowl—no floured surface or messy countertop to clean. Form dough into large ball shape and cover bowl with towel. Let sit 10 minutes.
With olive or avocado oiled hands, press dough on a greased rimmed (or parchment paper lined) baking sheet. You want an even spread of the dough, so keep pressing it around until relative evenness is achieved. (Whether you go all the way to the edges of your baking sheet is up to you.) Preheat oven to 400°.
Now top as desired! Some of our favorite pizza toppings are organic red marinara type sauces, or simply a drizzle of oil with fresh tomato slices. Black olives, fresh minced garlic, spinach leaves, and sliced mushrooms are often toppings we go for. Depending on the pizza, sometimes we slice mozzarella or include spoonful's of ricotta, and we love feta cheese! Whether you go vegan or meat lover’s—this clean pizza crust recipe works.
Don’t forget seasonings. We often cut some fresh herbs to include—basil, oregano, or rosemary. Organic onion and garlic powder, an Italian seasoning blend, and cayenne powder or red pepper flakes are our go to pizza spices.
Once delightfully covered in toppings, slide your homemade pizza onto the bottom rack in the oven. Bake 10 minutes. Move pizza to the oven's middle rack and bake about 3-5 minutes more, until your toppings have that perfect golden tone.
Slice and enjoy every bite. :)
