A walk a day…
Walking is healthy. We know it’s not really a new groundbreaking fact that exercise is important for our health, but what’s amazing is how even just a little walking can make a big impact.
With over half a billion results upon Googling “healthy benefits of walking”, there’s no shortage of reasons why this low impact, completely free exercise is worth incorporating into your daily routine.
From leg toning and burning calories to strengthening immunity and enjoying an improved mood and mindset—daily walking is worth the steps.
Why Walking Is So Important
A lot of work commutes are achieved sitting in cars or public transportation, many jobs are spent at a desk, and when we’re tired at the end of a long day, maybe all we want to do is sit down and rest. That can be understandable, but why not try getting outdoors and walking on lunch breaks?
Did you know? Walking has been shown to help you think more creatively, increase energy levels, and reduce stress and tension. Who doesn’t need that? Plus, if you’re getting sunshine and fresh air as you walk, it’s an extra win.
This sometimes overlooked form of exercise is simple and doesn’t require an expensive gym membership. From soaking in natural surroundings and bird songs to talking with a walking buddy or listening to your favorite tunes through earbuds, walking never has to be boring.
Some Healthy Benefits That May Come From Regular Walking:
- Reduce body fat and and maintain a healthy weight
- Strengthen the heart and improve circulation
- Stimulate the digestive system
- Boost brain power and improve mood
- Alleviate joint pain
- Bolster the immune system and reduce risk of chronic disease
- Reduce stress and lower anxiety
While it’s true that you may see bigger benefits from walking with more speed and distance, even just a few minutes of walking each day can step up your health. Any amount of physical activity is better than none at all, so go at a pace that works for you, and if possible work up—and don’t be too hard on yourself if you take baby steps. Walking should be enjoyable, something that helps you feel good, and a gentle to moderate exercise you look forward to.
Every step you take is a step in the right direction and a smart part of a healthy lifestyle journey. So lace up those walking shoes (or hey, go barefoot) and enjoy the healthy benefits of walking!
We apologize for all those puns you walked right into while reading. 😉
